There’s something about the handwritten word that makes my heart skip a beat.

So you can only guess how much I’m looking forward to tonight’s twitter chat 8PM ET on Twitter using the hashtag #SheafferLiving & #NSS {National Stationery Show}

I sure hope you’ll join in the chat! It’s sure to be a beautiful paper kind of a time!

This chat wouldn’t be possible without our host Sheaffer Pen and our amazing panel of industry experts — four amazing women with a pulse on trends in Stationery and an eye for design.

So without further ado, I introduce our experts to you…

Our first Expert Panelist is @LHCalligraphyLaura Hooper, calligraphy expert and amazing artist.

For the past ten years, Laura has worked with countless brides and grooms to create the most elegant calligraphy for their invitations and weddingstationery. She also designs custom hand drawn maps, unique place cards and other chic items for the most discerning of brides. Laura has worked with several high profile celebrities and companies for their personal and corporate events, and has been published in numerous magazines, including The Knot, Inside Weddings, Martha Stewart Weddings and Town & Country Weddings, among many others.

When she is not lettering for her clients, Laura enjoys maintaining her blog, A Lucky Orchid Wedding, travelling and visiting the beach. Laura is a member of the Association of Calligraphic Arts and the San Fernando Valley chapter of the Society for Calligraphy. Laura currently resides in Redondo Beach with her husband, Jeremy, and their dogs, Kepler and Tycho.

Our next Panelist is one of the most influential people in the industry with a pulse on the trends and an amazing eye for

Another Leader in the Industry in the area of  Stationery Trends . . .

Expert Panelist @StationeryTrend, Stationery Trends Magazine (tweeting for them is the fablous Kimberly Warren, Director of Media Services)

Stationery Trends magazine seeks to guide stationery retailers in their quest to offer the latest designs and trends to their customers — including everything from stationery and greeting cards to gifts. The design-focused trade magazine provides retailers with a peek at some of the industry’s hottest designers and most sought-after products. Stationery Trends reports on upcoming trends before they hit the mainstream, ensuring its audience of diverse retailers is always ahead of the curve.

And Last but not least, one of the Stationery Industries brightest stars and biggest team players!

Expert Panelist @WhitneyEnglish, of Whitney English Company

whitney-english-kolb-headshot

At age 15, Whitney English Kolb began a life-long love affair with paper and interior design at a stationery and gift store in her hometown of Oklahoma City. The two passions, combined with her love of antique prints and textiles, fused in 2002 to create a unique marketplace niche for the Whitney English brand.

The company was founded with baby-sitting money and elbow grease, so it makes a good story. Whitney’s parents, family, and friends all chipped in at one time or another, either by talking her through financials or folding note cards, so if you ask, she never takes all the credit and firmly believes in both verbal and written (of course) gratitude.

Whitney and her husband David live in Oklahoma City with their two sons, Birch and Truitt, and dog, Frances Cornelia. David has worked in both furniture and paper, so he’s her dreamboat, really. If there is one thing they are, it is Southern, in a hospitable, gracious, good food and wine sort of way.

She has an affinity for antique French chairs, an appreciation for good handbags and great shoes, and an obsession with classic typestyles. At night, she dreams of charming cottages by the sea, silk ballgowns and a perfectly organized office.

Mother’s Manners

by Mindy Lockard on May 8, 2012

“Good manners reflect something from within an innate consideration for others and respect for self!” — Emily Post

me-and-mom

Manners in my childhood home were less about the fork and more about consideration for each other. My mother always made sure my siblings and I were respectful, even in the heated moments. She insisted we celebrate one another’s successes, even when we didn’t have any of our own. And always expected us to stand-up for each other, even when our social status had to take a back seat. For my mother, the sibling relationship was a practice ground for the manner in which we would approach “real world” relationships. To this day my siblings are the most important people in my life and I’m so grateful for my mother’s attention to the detail of consideration for others, even when the “others” were  the people that day-in-and-day-out I could have taken for granted.

In looking back over my life, I’ve been so blessed by many women who have taught me about living a gracious life…

From the beginning there was my Grandma JoAnne who prayed like a warrior and delivered flowers to her neighbors on a daily basis.

In the First-Grade I met Mrs. Quanbeck, my first theater director, who never let me settle and always challenged me to raise the bar.

Then came the tween years… Mrs. Miller, my childhood best friend’s mother, dazzled me with her sophisticated style and inspired me to always seek quality for my life.

The teen years. . . Mrs. Ogdahl, my first boss celebrated my creativity while teaching me solid work ethic.

The college years. . .  Mrs. Lockard (mother-in-law) who exemplifies thoughtfulness and inspires me to do the same.

And finally . . .

My career where Ms. Johnson, the founder of the Protocol School of Washington, walked me through “official” etiquettes and gave me a voice.

And these are just a handful of the amazing women who have been willing to invest in me and bless my life. And although I learned most of what I know from my amazing mother, there have been so many other women who have blessed my life with their willingness to invest in me and show me their Gracious ways. So whether you’re a mother, a Grandmother, Mother-in-law, a friend’s mother, teacher or a boss … it’s never too late to invest in the lives of women and pass on the legacy of Gracious Living!

Today over on Sheaffer’s Facebook Page we are talking about the amazing mothers or mother figures in our lives… we’d love to hear from you!
